Yesterday I gave a little back story on how different ancient cultures viewed SOUL (along with some fun Soul Riffin’. See here.) I also referenced hearing people mention that they don’t believe in soul, or spirit. (!!!) They believe they are simply a physical pile of atoms that function for a period of time and then poof – they’re gone.
The question of whether our consciousness, as humans, is finite or not, has been going on for millennia. Science has long scorned the dreamy beliefs of mystics - that our essence is a part of something much bigger. Whole religions have been built to try to address this question. And countless wars have been waged to try to prove who is right.
Now, scientists are beginning to verify the very argument that they previously scorned. Science has identified a connection between consciousness and quantum physics. Theorists see evidence of a “quantum wave” that connects everything and that is built upon an architecture of consciousness that simultaneously exists in all worlds at once and manifests life as we know it. I won’t go into all the minutiae about microtubules and fractals, but it is fascinating.
I have always loved water as an analogy (read here) and, again, it is applicable: Truly, a river – or wave – runs through the universe that connects and unifies us all. And that ineffable essence is the part of our human experience that we call soul, or spirit, or consciousness. Or the divine.
In my book, Soul Primer (an alphabet for the Soul), the letter D is for Divinity. In this section we practice connecting to the Divine inside of us. For years I have described the longing for “something more” as the longing to connect to the divine. We all have this longing (though it may be stuffed deep down inside of us).
As far as religions, I believe they are an outgrowth and testament to this longing. And, I believe they can be a distraction away from it as well. As a metaphor, imagine if everyone was longing to see the full moon (i.e. the divine). We go out into the night hoping to find the full moon and we see a light and think, “Ah, that is it!” Religions are like flashlights in the sky. They may look like the full moon, but they’re poor imitations. In fact, we each have the ability to connect, directly, to the “full moon,” (i.e., the quantum wave of consciousness - the divine energy of the universe - that runs through all things and all times.) No false lights needed. (I also know that many people get great comfort from religions, and no harm done - As long as no harm is done…..)
So, why does it sadden me when I hear people say they don’t believe in soul? Because it is the understanding of the connectedness of all things that is the key to a transformed world (I talk about this in U is for Universe as well). When we do not see and know our interconnectedness with each other and with all things, we can only see with eyes of ego and we believe we are separate from others.
It doesn’t take a mystic to see that part of our world is completely disconnected from this understanding and is moving toward a total disregard for the “other” – for those who are suffering, those who are poor or homeless, those who are refugees and immigrants, those who are different. This complete lack of empathy for other sentient beings is much easier when one doesn’t believe in soul, or unified consciousness.
The belief in separateness and us-vs-others is the only way holocausts and apartheids and ethnic cleansings can happen: when humans are viewed as expendable fleshbags, instead of holy receptacles of a divine and cosmic consciousness, then cruelty becomes easy.
Look around and it is not hard to find examples of cruelty, hate, meanness, selfishness. There is a movement to suppress the divine, even amongst those who claim to be religious, that is wreaking havoc upon our world.
So, yes, when I talk about “Things That Matter,” SOUL matters.
Fortunately, there is a movement also gathering speed, and that is this awareness of the interconnectedness of all things – the awareness of this “quantum wave” of consciousness. More of us are accessing the cosmic energy that illuminates a better way. People are practicing, with more intentionality, the skills that align the soul into healthy connection with all things, including our mother planet and all the creatures upon it.
It is critical that each of us get into “alignment” with or “in tune” with our soul’s connection to this great quantum wave. Through practices like Meditation (yes, M is for Meditation) and other soul skills, we begin to access our reason for being here. We begin to understand that we have a part to play, a lap to swim, a note to sing in this great song of life.
It matters to me that we all care about this.
And if that’s not enough to convince you, there’s always bacon…..
Thank you for being here with me, and caring with me, on this 5th day of 88 days of writing.
With love, Cate
PS. We’ll be reactivating our Light Warriors Group in the fall. Please send me a message from my website if you would like to be a part of this group that is committed to accessing the divine energy and light of cosmic consciousness.
